As for infecting boot sectors, that IS infecting the DOS, since the DOS
is normally loaded off the boot tracks.

It's really not much harder to send out a ROM chip set update than it is
to send out floppies.  Really.  So I don't think DOSes in ROMs are any
kind of problem as far as updates and bug fixes go; that is, any more
problem than MS-DOS computers already inflict by having BIOS in ROM --
a primitive and annoying feature.  Anybody out there ever use CP/M?
BIOS gets loaded with OS off boot tracks.  This allows you to FIX your
BIOS if you don't like it.  And boy have I ever disliked some BIOSes
in the past.
