Well, this isn't a virus per se, but I thought I'd mention it here because
it spread over so much of the Usenet that it's become a major annoyance...

Yesterday, a student on the Usenet sent out a request for money to further
his education. He's requesting that each person reading his message sends
him $1.00 - kind of like a chain letter... He sent this out to *MANY*
major Usenet discussion lists. While reading Usenet news this morning,
I probably saw his posting on about 20 different news groups.

Granted, this poor starving student probably (!) deserves money to
continue to go to college. But, I'd hate to see this sort of thing set
a precedent on e-mail forums such as VIRUS-L and those on the Usenet.
It'd become as bad as the CHRISTMA EXEC - everyone would be sending out
this sort of junk mail over the networks which would undoubtedly cause
lots of congestion, to say the least. Sort of a human nature virus...?

Ken

P.S. For obvious reasons, I didn't want to re-post the student's message
     here.

It certainly seems that viruses have taken a strong hold in the States.
As yet the UK has got off *relatively* lightly (howls of rage expected
from unfortunate UK victims :-). We'd like to warn our students and staff
of the dangers, and teach them some basic hygiene, but it's difficult to
do so without contributing to the panic and hype. Gentle reader, how does
one pitch the documentation?

Speaking of hype, I think the best parody of an OTT virus story came from
a friend of mine (who shall for the moment remain nameless, since I don't
have his permission for reposting). Please don't think I'm taking the subject
lightly; just staying sane:

> I actually had to replace the transformer in the power supply of
> my PC after a really nasty virus had hacked its way onto it. My
> supplier said I would have to replace major sections of the
> plastic moulding around the monitor, but it looks like I got away

> nearly caught the blighter before it got to the transformer, but
> the bloody thing slipped up the secondary winding before I could
> zap it.

Think of that next time you hear of some punter having to replace ROMs because
some nasty program had run riot!

Isn't it strange how few UK correspondents bother with disclaimers?
