Subject: implementing protection mechanisms

I'd be interested in seeing some discussion about what virus protection
mechanisms other people have actually implemented, particularly in
microcomputer labs at universities. I don't just mean commercially
available products; rather, any steps that are currently being taken
at your site to try to prevent viruses from spreading there. Are you
just using write protect tabs, etc., or are you also using some program(s)
to try to detect them?

Here at Lehigh University, we're currently implementing more and more
Novell Local Area Networks - the network file server providing read-only
access to all executable files on the LAN. We're also using notchless
boot floppy disks for the workstations. Granted, there are ways of
getting around the notchless floppies (via modifying hardware...), but
they seem to be doing a pretty reasonable job (knock on wood :-).
We're also currently evaluating a number of commercial products.

So, what's everyone else doing? Opinions?
