From: Chris McDonald (5/6/93) To: securitylist:;@WSMR-SIMTEL20.AR, CC: reviewslist:;@WSMR-SIMTEL20.ARM, Mail*Link¨ SMTP Information Systems Securit #93-15 1. The dates for the Federal Criteria Invitational Workshop have been set for June 2-3, 1993 at the Turf Valley Hotel and Country Club, Ellicott City, MD. I received a registration packet this week. While I did submit comments to the proposed criteria, I will be in St. Louis on business that week. If any of you on this direct mailing may have submitted comments, and may have received a similar invitation to attend, would you let me know so that I might share with you my comments. 2. A few days after I revised Product Test # 36, Central Point Anti-Virus, I logged on to the Central Point BBS and discovered that an updated viral signature file was available. You may remember that my revised product test commented on the fact that the last update had occurred in late January 1993. The date of the posting on the BBS was April 27, 1993; the date of the file itself is April 14, 1993. The readme file included identifies the new or revised signatures, but does not speak to the MtE detection issues raised by "Virus Bulletin" and "Virus News International" (Vesselin Bontchev). 3. The Winter 1993 edition of "Computing Systems" has a short, readable and reproducible article entitled "United We Fall, or Killing the Goose that Laid the Golden Egg". The author is Steve Johnson, Melismatic Software, who examines industry trends. "Computing Systems" is the journal of the USENIX Association which offers excellent membership benefits on conferences, reference materials, software, and tutorials. Membership information may be obtained from office@usenix.org. 4. The May/June 1993 edition of "Info Security" published by the MIS Training Institute continues to improve in overall quality. The articles in this edition are diverse. Free subscriptions remain available to qualified readers. Information through the Internet may be obtained from 243-9796@mcimail.com. 5. "PCMagazine", May 25, 1993 has an article by Neil J. Rubenking entitled "Watch Out for Viruses the Inexpensive Shareware Way". F-PROT (PT-17), VIRUSCAN (PT-3), and Integrity Master receive favorable reviews. ------- ------------------ RFC822 Header Follows ------------------ Received: by internetqm.llnl.gov with SMTP;6 May 1993 09:41:07 -0800 Return-path: CMCDONALD@WSMR-SIMTEL20.ARMY.MIL Received: from icdc.llnl.gov by icdc.llnl.gov (PMDF #3384 ) id <01GXUMQHDVV4A3C8SI@icdc.llnl.gov>; Thu, 6 May 1993 09:40:46 PST Received: from pierce.llnl.gov by icdc.llnl.gov (PMDF #3384 ) id <01GXUMPZLRVKA3C8RR@icdc.llnl.gov>; Thu, 6 May 1993 09:40:24 PST Received: by pierce.llnl.gov (4.1/LLNL-1.18/llnl.gov-05.92) id AA21908; Thu, 6 May 93 09:41:08 PDT Received: from WSMR-SIMTEL20.ARMY.MIL by pierce.llnl.gov (4.1/LLNL-1.18/llnl.gov-05.92) id AA21897; Thu, 6 May 93 09:40:56 PDT Date: 06 May 1993 09:52:49 -0700 (MDT) From: Chris McDonald Subject: Information Systems Security Update # 93-15 Resent-to: BILL_ORVIS@QUICKMAIL.llnl.GOV To: securitylist:;@WSMR-SIMTEL20.ARMY.MIL Cc: reviewslist:;@WSMR-SIMTEL20.ARMY.MIL Resent-message-id: <01GXUMQHGAO2A3C8SI@icdc.llnl.gov> Message-id: <12874851728.20.CMCDONALD@WSMR-SIMTEL20.ARMY.MIL> X-Envelope-to: BILL_ORVIS@QUICKMAIL.llnl.gov X-VMS-To: IN%"securitylist:;@WSMR-SIMTEL20.ARMY.MIL" X-VMS-Cc: IN%"reviewslist:;@WSMR-SIMTEL20.ARMY.MIL" Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT ======================================================================
