NIST has available for anonymous ftp an ASCII text version of the draft Federal Criteria. If the postscript format gave you problems, you might give it a shot. The draft is split into two distinct files, fcvol1.txt and fcvol2.txt in the path /pub/nistpubs on the NIST ftp host. This is an opportunity for USERS to let their thoughts be known. Those of you familiar with the staffing of the Trusted Computer System Evaluation Criteria and The Network Interpretation remember how difficult it was to obtain copies of the respective drafts. One had the impression that only a select group had an opportunity to involve themselves in the process. If one fails to take the time now to review the material and to offer constructive comments, then one has no basis upon which to cry later about the consequences. The respectives ASCII files are approximately 500,000 to 650,000 bytes. 2. Patricia Hoffman has issued a January 20, 1993 edition of her Hypertext Virus Summary List. VSUMX9301.zip is available from several sites to include mcaffe.com. The zipped file is over 700,000 bytes. As announced in a previous update, I will no longer summarize the list. I can tell you that Patricia's list of common viruses remains at 72, the same number reported in her last list and still a subject of controversy. 3. PCWeek, February 15, 1993, has a brief review of Sun's Solaris 2.1 operating system. The article focuses on the security-related features, to include an Automated Security Enhancement Tool (ASET) which apparently comes bundled. The description of ASET suggests that COPS-like features are now available at no extra charge. 4. John Norstad, a professor by day and the author of DISINFECTANT by night, will be releasing version 3.0 soon for the Macintosh. Some issues have arisen necessitating the update. There may also be respective announcements from Symantec (SAM) and DataWatch (VIREX). When all the dust has settled, the suggestion to utilize more than just one anti-viral tool will have been reinforced. 5. Those of you who may utilize the anti-viral software repository on simtel20, 192.88.110.20, need to be aware that a directory renaming has occurred. You can now find your favorite tools in the path: pd1: vice the path pd1:. If you use a simtel20 mirror site or TRICKLE server, please consult the appropriate source. 6. On a personal note you need to address all mail to me at cmcdonald@wsmr-simtel20.army.mil as soon as possible. My primary mail host, wsmr-emh03.army.mil, will be turned off soon and mail to the host will not be forwarded. Let me recommend for your "light reading" enjoyment a novel by Neal Stephenson entitled "Snow Crash". I quote from the back cover: "In the near future, Americans excel at only two things: writing software and delivering pizza in less than 30 minutes . . . Is it any wonder that most sane folks have forsaken the real world and chosen to live in the computer-generated universe of virtual reality?" ------------------ RFC822 Header Follows ------------------ Received: by internetqm.llnl.gov with SMTP;22 Feb 1993 20:33:29 U Return-path: cmcdonal <@WSMR-SIMTEL20.ARMY.MIL:cmcdonal@wsmr-emh03.army.mil> Received: from icdc.llnl.gov by icdc.llnl.gov (PMDF #3384 ) id <01GV19R47H748ZEF1E@icdc.llnl.gov>; Mon, 22 Feb 1993 20:19:29 PST Received: from pierce.llnl.gov by icdc.llnl.gov (PMDF #3384 ) id <01GV19IRA83K8ZEF4X@icdc.llnl.gov>; Mon, 22 Feb 1993 20:13:33 PST Received: by pierce.llnl.gov (4.1/LLNL-1.18/llnl.gov-05.92) id AA26639; Mon, 22 Feb 93 20:13:18 PST Received: from WSMR-SIMTEL20.ARMY.MIL by pierce.llnl.gov (4.1/LLNL-1.18/llnl.gov-05.92) id AA26628; Mon, 22 Feb 93 20:13:09 PST Received: from wsmr-emh03.army.mil by WSMR-SIMTEL20.ARMY.MIL with TCP; Mon, 22 Feb 1993 21:11:51 -0700 (MST) Date: 22 Feb 1993 20:56:10 -0700 (MST) From: Chris McDonald STEWS-IM-CM-S Subject: Information Systems Security Update, #93-7 Resent-to: BILL_ORVIS@QUICKMAIL.llnl.GOV To: /usr/cmcdonal/maillist:@wsmr-emh03.army.mil Cc: /usr/cmcdonal/reviewlist:@wsmr-emh03.army.mil Resent-message-id: <01GV19R4R1AQ8ZEF1E@icdc.llnl.gov> Message-id: <9302230413.AA26628@pierce.llnl.gov> X-Envelope-to: BILL_ORVIS@QUICKMAIL.llnl.gov X-VMS-To: IN%"/usr/cmcdonal/maillist:@wsmr-emh03.army.mil" X-VMS-Cc: IN%"/usr/cmcdonal/reviewlist:@wsmr-emh03.army.mil" Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT ======================================================================
